Aviary, het nieuwe album van Julia Holter is episch muzikaal reisverslag door wat ze zelf beschrijft als €œthe cacophony of the mind in a melting world€. Het is het meest adembenemend grootse album tot nu toe van de componiste uit Los Angeles, vol verrassende wendingen en wervelende instrumentale arrangementen. De opvolger van haar veelgeprezen 'kamermuziek-pop' album uit 2015, Have You in My Wilderness, neemt als uitgangspunt een zin uit een kort verhaal van schrijver Etel Adnan uit 2009: "I found myself in an aviary full of shrieking birds". Het is een scenario dat direct uit een horrorfilm komt, maar het is ook een goede metafoor voor het leven in 2018, met zijn eindeloze reeks politieke schandalen, grillige natuurrampen, en stemmen die hun verlangens en wrok in de leegte schreeuwen. Negro Swan is het vierde album van Producer, multi-instrumentalist, componist, songwriter en zanger Devonté Hynes onder de naam Blood Orange. Hynes, geboren Amerikaan maar opgegroeid in Engeland bracht als tiener al albums uit onder de namen Test Icicles, dansbare post punk, en Lightspeed Champion, dat meer in de indie folk hoek zat. Als Blood Orange creëerde hij een unieke future R&B sound. Hij werd een veelgevraagd schrijver/performer voor andere acts zoals Solange Knowles, Skepta, fka Twigs, Carly Rae Jepsen, A$AP Rocky en Charlotte Gainsbourg, Ook schreef hij de soundtrack voor de film Palo Alto van Sofia Coppola. In lovende kritieken op zijn vorige album Freetown Sound (2016) werd Hynes beschouwd als een van de belangrijkste stemmen van zijn generatie. Zijn persoonlijke kijk op het leven als zwarte man in Amerika leverde hem vergelijkingen op met Kendrick Lamar en D’Angelo. Op Negro Swan lijkt zijn stem helemaal tot wasdom gekomen te zijn. “My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of color. A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all. The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of HOPE, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness.”
